This is the master checklist for optimizing a gaming PC from scratch. Work through each layer in order — BIOS first, then Windows, drivers, and finally in-game settings.
BIOS Layer
- Enable XMP (Intel) or EXPO (AMD) — verify RAM runs at rated speed in Task Manager
- Disable C-States — prevents CPU frequency transitions during gameplay
- Enable Above 4G Decoding and Resizable BAR
- Set CPU power limits to maximum
- Disable PCIe ASPM
- Update BIOS if relevant performance fixes are available
