If you bought 3200MHz or 6000MHz RAM and never changed anything in your BIOS, your memory is almost certainly running at 2133MHz — the industry default. This is one of the most common and impactful free performance upgrades available to any PC gamer.

What Is XMP and EXPO?

XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) stores RAM overclock profiles directly on the memory module. EXPO is AMD's equivalent. Both run your RAM at the speed on the box instead of the conservative default — no manual overclocking required.

How to Access Your BIOS

Restart your PC and press the BIOS key during startup — typically Delete, F2, F10, or F12 depending on your motherboard. In Windows 11: Settings → System → Recovery → Advanced startup → Restart now → Troubleshoot → Advanced options → UEFI Firmware Settings.

Enabling XMP on Intel Systems

Navigate to the OC, Overclocking, or Tweaker section. Find XMP Profile and change it from Disabled to Profile 1. Save and exit with F10. Verify in Windows Task Manager → Performance → Memory — you should see the correct speed.

Enabling EXPO on AMD Systems

Find EXPO or EXPO Profile in your BIOS OC section. Enable the profile matching your RAM's rated speed. On AM5 platforms, EXPO 2 profiles are also available and may offer better stability.

Performance Impact

Enabling XMP/EXPO can improve gaming performance by 5–25% depending on the game. CS2, VALORANT, and Rainbow Six Siege see the largest gains because faster RAM reduces the time the CPU waits for data.
