GPU driver updates can unlock significant performance improvements and fix bugs. But installing drivers over old ones without cleaning leaves behind fragments that cause instability, crashes, and performance degradation over time.
Why Normal Updates Aren't Enough
When you run the standard NVIDIA or AMD installer with Express Installation, it upgrades driver files but leaves behind config files, shader caches, and registry entries. Over multiple updates, these accumulated leftovers cause conflicts. Symptoms include random crashes, black screens, and unexplained performance variance.
Download DDU — Display Driver Uninstaller
DDU is a free tool from Wagnardsoft that completely removes all traces of GPU drivers. Download it from guru3d.com. Also download your new drivers from NVIDIA.com or AMD.com before starting — you'll need them available offline.

Step 1: Download new driver installer and DDU. Save both to your desktop.
Step 2: Boot into Safe Mode — Settings → System → Recovery → Advanced startup → Restart now → Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → press 4.
Step 3: Run DDU in Safe Mode. Select your GPU type and click Clean and restart.
Step 4: After restarting, run the new driver installer. Choose Custom Installation and select only the components you need — driver, PhysX (NVIDIA). Uncheck HD audio and 3D Vision unless you use them.
After Installing
Reconfigure your NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Radeon Software — they reset to defaults. Set Power Management to Maximum Performance and re-enable per-game profiles. Expect some initial stutters during the first few sessions while shader cache rebuilds.
